Classic: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Synopsis: It is an epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into haves and have-nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity.
A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes the very nature of equality and justice in America.

Fun Fact: When I was younger, I pretty much would do whatever my brother did. Yes, I was the annoying little sister lol. So when he started reading Goosebumps, I read them too. Technically, they were probably not for my age group reading level, but I was a great reader.

Classic: A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Synopsis: In 1918 Ernest Hemingway went to war, to the war to end all wars. He volunteered for ambulance service in Italy, was wounded, and twice decorated. Classic: Emma by Jane Austen

Classic: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

Classic: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Synopsis: The poverty-stricken Raskolnikov, a talented student, devises a theory about extraordinary men being above the law, since in their brilliance they think “new thoughts” and so contribute to society. He then sets out to prove his theory by murdering a vile, cynical old pawnbroker and her sister. The act brings Raskolnikov into contact with his own buried conscience and with two characters -the deeply religious Sonia, who has endured great suffering, and Porfiry, the intelligent and discerning official who is charged with investigating the murder - both of whom compel Raskolnikov to feel the split in his nature. Dostoevsky provides readers with a suspenseful, penetrating psychological analysis that goes beyond the crime - which in the course of the novel demands drastic punishment — to reveal something about the human condition: The more we intellectualize, the more imprisoned we become.

Classic: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Synopsis: Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs, all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone harboring an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations, where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress.

Other: Berenstain Bears by Jan and Stan Berenstain

One of my favorite series' as a kid was The Baby-sitter's Club, as well as the follow-up series to that, Baby-sitters Little Sister Ann M Martin. I can't tell you how many of these books I had back then. If anyone is familiar with these, my favorite character was always Stacey and Mallory.

Introduction to the April A to Z Challenge.

A Book Extravaganza

I decided to get creative this year in the titles of each day's post and do adjectives for each letter. Keep in mind that the select adjective for each day does not describe the selected books I've chosen.

Each day in the month of April (except for Sundays of course), I will be posting a classic book, in addition to books that have inspired me or what I was into throughout different periods in my life on select days. Some will be children's books and a couple will be for any age. Of course there are many more books that I have loved through the years.

Let's get started.

Classic: The Art of War by Sun Tzu
